Richard Johnson Big Fish for Logan Martin
by Richard Johnson
(Birmingham, Al)
3 lbs, 1oz.
Logan Martin was the playing field and Golden Rod Bassmasters met at Lakeside Marina for our May event.
After making a long run to an island just down from Riverside, I started the morning with a topwater spook; no takers.
Threw a crankbait and spinnerbait; still no takers. Figured I would slow things down and instead of my staple, The Shakey Head, I went with the split shot rigged lizard.
Finally got a 12in keeper to bite so the skunk was gone. A few cast later to a grass point on the back of the island, I got the bite that would give me the big fish of the tournament.
The fish hit the zoom lizard pumpkin/chartreuse on the fall. A swift hook set with the 30lb test power-pro braid and the 3lbs 1oz largemouth was in the boat.
I was able to run further up the river and tweak out a small limit, enough to win the event. Logan has some much bigger bass than this one, but for that day, this was the biggest one it was going to give me.
If you get a chance to fish the coosa chain, don't forget about Logan Martin.
