The first state in region one is Alabama and it is in the SPOT LIGHT FOR THE WORLD to see the largest tournament stage in bass fishing, my sweet home will once again host the BASS MASTERS CLASSIC, held on Lay Lakethe same body of water I fish the most when I am at home.
What I can tell you is that fishing will be tough for some, but the pro's will figure it out very quickly, that is what makes them a cut above the average Joe heading to the water on the weekends. plus this is not the first time they have fished this body of water for a lot of them.
Unless we get some major warm weather the water temperature will still be a little chilly, as of now the temperature is in the upper 40's with signs of warming to the lower to mid 50's around the time the classic gets there in mid February. Let us hope wehave a nice heat wave come our way, so all can see the great fishery we have in lower part of Birmingham Ala.
The Bass fishing in region one has always been top notch in late February all the way thru December, a lot of bass clubs put this lake on their
schedule to start off the tournament season.
The lures I think will play a major role in this tournament will be a shaky head
worm, in the colors of watermelon, green pumpkin, and if the water is clear I would use a cotton candy green, now the second lure
will be a finesse jig in the green pumpkin and black and blue tipped with a rage tail craw to match.
The reason I feel these two lures can be the key to someone getting on a good bite is the jig can be fished on a drop off on points in about 6 to 15 feet of water
while the fish have still not moved up due to the colder temperatures. A shaky head worm is something that you can fish shallow or
deep and the almighty spotted bass, just can't stand looking at without eating it up.
Now I know on any given day someone will catch bass on other lures and come in with good weight, but I feel that everyone of the pro's will pick up a jig and a shaky head and go searching or at least have it as a back up to what ever lure they're starting off fishing with.
I would not be surprised if one or two of them cast out a fish head spin coupled with a zoom fluke, crank down deep with a white crank bait.
Well good luck to all the pro's , we will be watching and taking notes to see how we measure up on the lake vs. you.
