The cast for Kids tournament held April 10th 2010 on Lake Guntersville to raise money for the event being held at Guntersville state park to help teach handicap children of Alabama May 1st 2010. The tournament had a nice turn out and I made some new friends along the way
My partner and myself had a nice day on the lake having the opportunity to learn a little about Lake Guntersville.
I have lived out of state for years and I had not fished Lake Guntersville in Alabama only one other time in my life, I've always heard of the great fishery this lake can be and how it was one of the favorite lake's in the south.
Plus it was a chance to give back to the state by fishing the benefit tournament for Alabama's special needs kids.
The lake held up to it's reputation by having some nice fish weight come to the scales, we didn't have enough weight to come into the money, but we caught fish all day long.
I was fishing a powerteam 6" gator lizard under the docks, and on some wood cover. We fished the lizard on a split shot rig, with a spinning reel 6'6" rod combo and skipping it under the dock as far back as we could and letting it flutter down.
If the fish didn't hit it we would reel it in and make another cast, sometimes it would take 5 to 6 times of skipping it under the dock, before they would hit the lure.
After the tournament was over we talked to some of the local Anglers finding out that we were doing the correct things, just not in the area's were the bigger fish were holding.
Getting this tid bit of information was key for my partner and I because we were due to return to the lake the following week for our club 2 day tournament going out of waterfront.
We had such a nice time meeting all the people we made sure that signed up as volunteers to teach the kids about fishing to take the kids out on the boats on May 1st 2010.
My wife and I had the opportunity to sign up our granddaugher she is Legally blind/with other disabilities.
Kelsie and the other kids will benefit greatly from this organization. That is the reason I fished the event to help raise money and to share my time with the kids. My wife was on line and found out about it. She thought about Kelsie and said she wanted to sign her up and be a volunteer for this event. As a matter of fact it was one of the best times that I have had on the water and fishing a tournament without winning or placing in the event.
I had a chance to help a worthy cause and myself by being on the lake that day. The other anglers where friendly and willing to share information that helped me to finish 2nd in the my club event te following week.
Without the friends I made there sharing their information with me, I would not have had a chance. So sharing information can turn a nice day to a great day on the lake.
