EARLY SPRING FISHING

Custom Search

Early spring fishing is the time when bass start to move up from there winter home, if the weather cooperates this can be mid February thru first three weeks of march it is just according to where you are located in the country.

Living and fishing in the south we have a chance to fish a lot of times in late January with good limits if we have had a mild winter, not the case this year.

When the water temperature start to rise up to the mid 50's start looking for the bass to stage up on flats adjacent to deep water creek chanels, or even the mouth of creeks on the points.

I start looking for the bass in the six to ten foot range before I move up any shallower, before the sun comes out remember that the air temperature will always be cooler than the water, so do not rely on the air temperature much unless you have had serveral days of cold weather.

This would be the only time the bass might move back out to deeper water so start your day with lipless crank bait, a suspending jerk bait, or if your lucky enough to have a large supply of grass in your lake it is time to use a swimming jig but the colors can vary due to the color of the water.

Lets just say we start the tournament at first light, I would start my day with a jerk bait on points next to deep water keeping my boat in about 12 to 20 feet casting up to 5 feet working the lure back out paying close attention to see if I see any bait fish on the depth finder moving along the surface.

along the surface. When you are early spring fishing pay attention to any bird movment and one key to this is to fish the sunny side of the lake, or river this will be the second place to warm under the sun the first will be area's that hold rocks.

If I don't get bitten I will work my way half way back in a cove then back out again pulling further out because the fish may be suspended in the channel instead of on the flats, I then start casting out a carolina rig and slow things down to try and find the first bite.

Keep changing lures until you find out what is working if all else fails put on a shaky head and slow your fishing down to a crawl.

Early spring fishing on Sam Rayburn last year I launched my boat in Caney creek ran to the mouth of little caney started fishing way off the point due to it is a shallow flat in that area I had the boat in about 18' of water casting up to about 6'.

I was casting a gold jerk bait, and a lip less crank bait after about half hour with no takers I started moveing inside the cove still with no takers I had made up my mind to move to 5 finger.

I picked up the trolling motor and heard something busting the surface of the water in the middle of the cove, dropping the motor I picked up the lip less crank bait and casted in the middle of the cove working my way back out of the pocket, water temperature was 57 degress I was in 14 foot of water and on my third cast I received my first taker of the day a nice 6 lb large mouth, two more cast one about 2 1/2 pounds.

To sum it up About my early spring fishing trip I ended up with 8 fish in that area in less than a hour. Moved to another location on the lake and repeated the same routen catching 3 bass in that area total for the day 17 fish in the 10 to 14 depth range on a lipless crank bait and by the way I would cast it out and yo yo it back to the boat getting hit on the fall.
