BOW THE PLACE TO GO TO BE COME AN OUTDOOR WOMAN
BOW is an outdoor skills program founded by Christine L. Thomas to help women become more
confident in taking part variety of outdoor activities like hunting, shooting, fishing,
canoeing, and camping.
I came cross this story while I was reading my
WFN feeds it
interested me so I started looking in to it and found out there is a
workshop only 39 minutes away from me, and that the 2009 spring
bass class was taught by a woman angler Dana Beavers who is the President of the
largest Bass club in the state of Alabama.
More than 20,000 women participate in over 80
weekend-long workshops that are held in North America, Canada, and New Zealand.
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point starting offering the program
in 1991, the first being at Treehaven Field Station near Tomahawk with
100 participants.
With the help of funding provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
National Shooting Sports Foundation, Wisconsin Environmental
Education Board, and other organizations it has became very successful.
BOW welcomes women from all backgrounds to enjoy camaraderie with
other women in a supportive, non-competitive learning environment.
The workshop offers hands-on instruction in a fun and non-threatening learning environment.
Participants choose from over 50 courses such as backyard wildlife,
rock climbing, camp cooking, map and compass, camping, mountain biking,
shooting sports, fishing, hunting, canoeing, nature photography, nature crafts, archery,
ATV handling, bird watching, motor boat handling, and more.
In addition to learning new activities Studies have shown that women
who participate are more likely to continue fishing and hunting which
has increase the sales of hunting and fishing licenses, and park permits.

BOW participants who responded to a survey conducted in conjunction
with this research indicated they felt more positive about hunting,
fishing, and other outdoor activities as a result of the program.
The next BOW workshop in Alabama
will be in Oct. 1st to the 3rd at the Alabama 4-H Center 892 4-H Road Columbiana, AL 35051.
I plan to go to it with my daughter Ty, and my Youngest sister Aindria.
I look forward to it I want to see how much it has changed, you see I grew
up in Columbiana I lived there when the 4-H Center was build the man
in charge of it ate at the restaurant my mother work in everyday and
I worked there after school It was called Tex Smith's Barbeque.
He invited us to come and swim they had just finished the
pool so I was one of the very first people to swim in the pool and see
the 4-H center before it was even open for the first camp. I was 14 then
my sister was 10.

I will let all of you know first hand how much fun we have at OW. I would
like to here from other women who have been there and see more pictures
