BASS FISHING GEAR YOU WILL NEED BEFORE YOU HEAD TO THE WATER

Custom Search

Bass Pro Shops

This is the basic bass fishing gear you will need, starting with your fishing rods and bass fishing reels. The rod and reel is the bread and butter of fishing no matter what type of fishing you do, you can start off with a low cost reel & rod combo that can be purchased at any tackle store.

A rod or reel each can cost as little as twelve dollars, but can reach well over four hundred dollars for each.

What I suggest from my own experience is not to go bottom line to start with and not go to the extreme high end products, because both ways will put a strain on your wallet.

I would stay within the forty dollar range and above for your fishing rods, and the sixty dollar range for your bass fishing reel, that way you will have a good quality start at a low price.

The Bass Aholic Bait Shop Do some research on the type of fishing rods, there are several sizes from 5'6" all the way up to over 7' they will have spinning rods, bait casting rods.

The rods will even state if they are ultra lite to heavy, that will contribute to the line size and the lure weight you should cast on the fishing rod you're using. On some they will tell you about the tip action like fast action, moderate action, and slow tapering.

The bass fishing gear info on reels will come in under the same as the rods. Bait casters, and spinning reels are the popular ones, there are other type of reels on the market but these are the two types of reels used 99.9% of the time.

You will need to look at a couple things with your reels, (1) gear ratio, and (2) bearings & brake system.

We will go into detail about both later on to help you decide what you may want or need, but you should keep in mind the cost and what feels good to you. There are more brand names out there, than you can count.
Bass fishing gear that we will cover as well, is the fishing line and types that are on the market, which will tie into the type of fishing you will be doing and the baits that they work best with, also this is another item that the price range varies.

Rule to keep in mind is the line will need to match up with your bass fishing reels, and lures used.

Just try to cast a one once sinker on ten pound test and see how many weights you can lose, or better yet put twenty pond test on any crank bait and you may get it to go out ten feet or less.

I tried flipping a jig in cover with ten pound test, I got seven bites and only landed one, which was not a keeper do you think I would have picked up another rod? sure but all had the same line test ten pounds on them.

The moral to this is to have different line sizes on some of the other rods, but that was when I first started fishing.

The tackle box is where you keep your lures and other equipment stored, they are the same as the other items you can buy a box to store everything or specialize them, as well as soft and hard boxes in different brands.

A fishing net to help land your fish is recommended, but some do not use a net at all. Most boaters will have one with them so if you're a non boater I would ask if they have one or would they like for you to bring a net. Remember they are different sizes get the one that will fit your boat.

I prefer the rubber netted, collapsible nets because my crank baits don't get caught in the netting and the collapsible net lets me store it in a rod locker or in the bottom of the boat so it will not fly out while traveling down the lake. One of the important bass fishing gear to me is the clothing, because if your not dressed correctly it can make for a long day on the water. Let me make sure you bring a key clothing item first off is the coat, (rain coat), depending on the weather the kind of coat varies.

Hats are a must in your bass fishing gear to protect you from the elements, clear eye glasses help to protect you while moving around in the early morning or low light conditions, sunglasses will come in different tints to help with your fishing while its sunny.

The most important bass fishing gear is your life Jacket, Plus it's the LAW. Make sure you get the correct one that will fit your body weight, and it is US COAST GUARD approved. I suggest that any time the big engine is running to wear it and also most bass tournaments put this as a rule in order to compete in the event.

One other bass fishing gear item that deal with the clothing department is the bass fishing shirts, most bass fishing clubs have there shirts made to look and feel more uniformed and to identify the club, not required to have but looks good and more professional.

Look into the kind of shirts you get as well, some of them are a lot better than the others. They have shirts that protect your skin from the uv ray's from the sun and help keep you cool, others will help keep you from losing body heat in the winter.

But check into these different type's, you or your club may not want to invest a large amount of money on this gear; this is just eye candy it is good to have but it want keep you from fishing if you know what I mean.

Now if you are a boater the bass fishing gear is another whole ball game, you need to have a throw cushion w/ rope attached, fire extinguishers, paddle, tie rope, electronics to help navigate and find fish, a kill switch (attached to you while boat is running), a whistle or horn in the boat to signal for help and most anglers carry flares.

Try to keep a board that will measure the length of your fish, a culling system that can be purchased, or home made, a buoy to help keep you on your fish in deeper water. Please keep some kind of additive to put in your live well to help the fish stay alive and healthy.

A good set of jumper cables should also be considered bass fishing gear, it will be needed one time or another, and a tool box. I have had lures caught in my hand, been fined by fish, and to many other accidents in the course of the day where I needed an emergency kit.

Have you tried something new lately ?

Have you bought a new GPS, or picked up a new lure
because it looked good, let us know how it worked out.
